Speaking English

from: Jcl - Life of a .NET Developer, 27 May '05 - 20:14
I've been asked many times by spaniard people why do I make my blog in English. Usually my answer is "why not?", and that usually leads to their answer: "well, most people won't understand it in English and I am too lazy to translate it".

I am truly amazed at that answer, which sounds so obvious for them. I wonder what are they doing even looking at the Internet. Yes, I'm using italics here, because it's called Internet, not SpainNet.

I wonder how much information would general people be able to read on the Internet if everybody would write in their home language... probably 5% of what there is (you can't expect the generality of british or americans to really give out something interesting ;) ).

But this has a worst background... one that truly terrifies me, and that I've only seen happening in Spain... basically, the second part of the sentence, the "I'm too lazy to translate it" part. Basically this comes to mean: "I'd rather not read something that interests me than learning English" (not talking about this blog here), and that truly horrifies me.

I know there must be people like that, with absolutely zero will of learning useful stuff, but the sad fact is, that it's happening on young people, and the majority of it in Spain (at least, the majority of the ones I know).

I don't have solid facts about it, but let me presume that Spain must be the educated country with the least ratio of English speakers. They teach English at school, but, for the most part, you won't be able to see anyone out of school saying anything other than Hello or Good bye, and don't even try to get them link a whole sentence, much less to have any decent try at a chat.

I'm not saying that my English is better than anyone's, or even that I have a good English (I know I don't), but trust me if, as bad for other countries as my English could be, most people in Spain will be amazed at HOW AMAZINGLY GOOD my English is (probably when they are comparing with theirs).

Not trying to bore you repeating the same over and over again, but trust me, this blog will continue being in English, and basically, if people doesn't want to translate it (I don't really translate English anymore).... well, this might sound like too selfish but... I don't care. They will surely be able to find plenty of blogs in Spanish to read.

This blog is surely nothing important, and something they can just live without but, trust me, just for not trying to learn English (while surfing the Internet, at least), you are missing like 90% of the nice world of information there is around this "cyberworld". Shame on you, Spaniard.
